At Freshford Church School, our geography curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, wonder and a strong sense of place. Taught explicitly as geography, it helps children understand their immediate environment of our village and city and from that vantage point, look outwards to the wider world. They will explore how physical and human processes shape places over time. Through fieldwork, mapping, enquiry and the use of a range of sources, pupils develop core geographical skills and vocabulary, learning to ask informed questions, identify patterns and make sense of change. Geography nurtures compassion and cultural understanding by immersing children in the study of diverse people and places, encouraging them to explore the many ways humans respond to and solve the physical and social challenges of an interconnected world
Geography at Freshford is also understood as a connective subject, linking naturally with science, history, RE, sustainability, citizenship and ethics. Pupils are encouraged to make connections between space, place, environment and global issues such as inequality, resource use and climate change, helping them see geography as relevant and meaningful. Through this broad and balanced enquiry curriculum, children build pride and belonging in their local area of Freshford and Bath, while expanding their cultural capital and global awareness. Our intent is that pupils leave as curious, knowledgeable, compassionate and reflective geographers—equipped to care for others, respect the planet and contribute thoughtfully as citizens of the 21st century.
