As Freshford is a school with five classes and seven year groups, to organise our classes we need to share the Year 1 cohort across George and Bythesea, the Year 4 cohort across Ashe and Mill and the Year 5 cohort across Mill and Joyce.  Each year how we build the classes is different: this is because the number in each of the year groups differs in Key Stage 2 from year to year and because we have varying numbers of children who are new to the school.  And of course, no two cohorts are alike in their learning and social profile.

We very carefully consider the group and environment in which your child will learn and thrive in the best ways.  Each September all children move up a year group in whichever class they are in.   We see the mixed classes as an opportunity for each child to play their part in the creation of a fresh learning community each year and as a chance to see themselves afresh each year.  Thus, their September class will always be a new class.

Our Big Question curriculum is designed so that children do not repeat learning content, rather they build knowledge of the world through a thread that connects across and throughout their journey with us.

We believe our need to create new classes each year is a key factor in the success of our vision to, ‘create a trusted community where everyone feels they belong and we all play our part so that our children are free to explore, enjoy learning and grow confident in who they are, ready to take that with them into the wider world.’
