“Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”
[World Health Organisation]

At Freshford Church School, a child’s wellbeing is central to everything we do. We believe children thrive when they feel safe, valued, and supported, enabling them to grow into confident, independent individuals. Guided by our core values—CareBelieve you can, and Cheer each other on—we are committed to nurturing the whole child: emotionally, physically, socially, and academically.  The golden thread of our Christian Value of ‘Love in Action’ runs through all we do and can be seen, heard and felt in our community.  We pride ourselves on knowing every child, recognising when things may not be okay for each of them and seeking to understand through trusting relationships.

We recognise that mental health is fundamental to how we think, feel, learn, and interact with others. As a community, we are dedicated to promoting, protecting, and strengthening positive mental health for all students and staff. Through a whole-school approach, we continually reflect on and enhance our practice to ensure that wellbeing remains at the heart of school life.

We understand that many children and adults may experience mental health challenges at some point. Therefore, alongside promoting positive wellbeing, we are committed to identifying needs early and providing timely, appropriate support for every member of our community—working closely with parents, carers, and external specialists to ensure every child receives the care they need.

Our Approach

Our Wellbeing programme is designed to create a safe, supportive environment where children feel able to share concerns, develop resilience, and understand their emotions. It is rooted in evidence-based practice and is regularly reviewed to ensure a meaningful and lasting impact. Learning is thoughtfully linked to our termly Big Question, helping to embed wellbeing across the wider curriculum.

We aim to:

  • Support children to understand and express their emotions
  • Help them manage change, challenge, and adversity with resilience
